World's Biggest Slot Jackpot Won in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 27 -- A local Las Vegas woman has won the world's largest slot machine jackpot at the Desert Resort. The Nevada Megabucks jackpot of $34,955,489.56 hit shortly before 10 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

The winner, who so far has chosen to remain anonymous, received her first installment of $1,402,188.58 shortly after her win was verified by IGT (NYSE: IGT), the operator of the statewide slot network. Megabucks winners are paid over a 25 year period.

Ed Rogich, IGT vice president of marketing, said the winner is considering going public sometime on Thursday. She told Rogich that she had invested approximately $27 in the Megabucks machine before the three lucky logos lined up and the whistle began to sound.

The Desert Inn, which celebrates its 50th anniversary on April 24, was the fifth hotel to open on the Las Vegas Strip.

"We are absolutely thrilled The Desert Inn is now home to the world's largest slot jackpot payout in the history of gaming," said Mark Lefever, COO for the Strip resort. "As we prepare to celebrate our 50th anniversary in April, it is only appropriate that the newest Megabucks millionaire be christened at this historic property."

This jackpot exceeded the previous world record by more than $7-million, which was also won by a local Las Vegas woman in November 1998.

The Nevada Megabucks MegaJackpot can be won at one of 157 Nevada casinos that have Megabucks machines. Anytime the slot game is played at one of those casinos, the total continues to climb until it is won. The top prize is won with a 3-coin $1 bet.

Nevada Megabucks has produced 49 major winners in its 13-year history. The game builds from a base amount of $7 million. All IGT MegaJackpots are paid in annual installments upon verification, except Elvis, Slotopoly and Party Time, which are paid in their entirety upon verification.
